FIA to Launch AI-Powered System to Tackle Human Smuggling

FIA Launches AI-Based System to Combat Human Smuggling at Islamabad Airport

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based application to tackle human smuggling and improve immigration processes in Pakistan.

Officials confirmed that the system will be piloted at Islamabad International Airport, marking a major step toward modernizing border management and passenger processing.

High-Level Review and Funding

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was briefed on the initiative during a high-level meeting at FIA headquarters in Islamabad. Senior officials, including additional directors general and zonal directors via video link, reviewed ongoing reforms and the FIA’s modernization progress.

Naqvi described the AI platform as “a need of the hour,” approving immediate funding for IT upgrades and the renovation of FIA headquarters. He also instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to hand over land for the new FIA Academy without delay.

To address staffing shortages, recruitment for vacant posts will begin promptly. “Resources will be provided, but performance is expected in return,” Naqvi told FIA officers.

AI System to Streamline Immigration

The AI-powered platform is designed to:

  • Streamline passenger processing

  • Reduce long queues at airports

  • Enhance detection of human trafficking attempts

FIA Director General Raja Riffat Mukhtar highlighted recent digital reforms, including amendments to the FIA Act and the rollout of an e-office system where official notices will carry QR codes for transparency.

Strengthening National Security

The new AI system complements FIA’s ongoing anti-human trafficking efforts. In partnership with the EU and ICMPD, a second-line border control facility was established at Islamabad Airport in 2023, equipped with advanced forensic and IT tools.

Officials say the AI initiative will strengthen national security, disrupt trafficking networks, and make immigration more efficient and secure for passengers.
