Government Set to Restore Departmental Sports in Pakistan
August 29, 2025
In a major boost for Pakistan’s sporting sector, the federal government has decided to revive departmental sports, a move designed to provide long-term job security for athletes and strengthen the country’s domestic sporting structure.
The decision comes following the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who emphasized the importance of rebuilding a system that once formed the backbone of national sports. The initiative is expected to create sustainable employment opportunities while also enhancing institutional support and sponsorship for athletes.
High-Level Meeting on Revival Plan
According to The Nation, the matter was discussed during a meeting chaired by Federal Secretary for Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Mohyuddin Wani. The session was attended by representatives from government departments, sports federations, and key stakeholders.
One proposal reviewed was to assign each sport to the patronage of a government department, much like the traditional system where institutions such as PIA, WAPDA, Railways, and national banks played a vital role in developing talent.
Another suggestion was to introduce a grading system for elite sports, ensuring that high-performing athletes receive priority support and resources.
Why the Move Matters
For decades, departmental teams provided athletes with financial stability and consistent opportunities to compete. Their discontinuation, officials argue, disrupted the careers of many players and weakened the pipeline for national representation.
Sports experts believe that the revival of this system will not only restore lost trust but also encourage more young athletes to pursue professional careers without the fear of financial insecurity.
A Step Toward Stability
The return of departmental sports is being widely welcomed across the sporting community. By placing athletes under the institutional umbrella of government departments, the initiative promises a more sustainable ecosystem — where players can focus on excellence rather than survival.
