Large Chenab River Surge: Breach Created Near Rawaz Bridge in Jhang
A large surge of water in the Chenab River prompted authorities to carry out a controlled blast near Rawaz Bridge in Jhang, creating a breach. The measure is intended to divert water toward nearby villages and reduce pressure on Trimu Headworks. However, the water from the breach has already reached the Jhang-Chiniot Road, causing the roadway to submerge.
Meanwhile, officials are considering closing educational institutions in flood-affected areas for a week. Immediate evacuation orders have been issued for residents living along the river belts in Nankana, Sheikhupura, and Toba Tek Singh.
DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia reported that 20 people have lost their lives in the floods so far. He emphasized that river channels must be cleared to prevent further damage, stating, “If water channels are not cleared, the situation will worsen.”
Authorities have invoked the Flood Plain Act under the directives of the Chief Minister to ensure safe evacuation and water management. DG PDMA also warned that future development projects must account for climate change; otherwise, they risk significant damage.
