NDMA Issues Flood Warning as Heavy Rains Expected Across Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood warning for several regions after forecasting heavy rainfall from September 1 to 3. Rising water levels in major rivers, combined with releases from upstream dams, may trigger flooding in low-lying areas.
Currently, the Sutlej River is experiencing a high flow of 253,068 cusecs, with projections reaching 300,000 cusecs in the coming days. The Ravi River at Jasarr is at a normal rate of 60,094 cusecs, but additional rain and Thane Dam releases could push it to 150,000 cusecs. Tributaries including Nalah Ben, Basantar, and Dek are also at risk.
Meanwhile, the Chenab River at Marala is discharging 94,728 cusecs, but rainfall and dam releases from Jammu and Kashmir—such as Salal, Baglihar, and Dal Hasti—may lead to sudden surges, threatening nearby areas and tributaries like Jammu Tawi, Manwar Tawi, and Palkhu.
Precautions and Emergency Measures
NDMA has warned that farmland, embankments, and low-lying settlements could be affected. Authorities urge residents, especially those near riverbanks, to stay alert, follow evacuation instructions, and prepare emergency kits with essentials and important documents.
The National Emergency Operations Center is operational 24/7, coordinating with civil and military agencies to oversee rescue and relief efforts. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone areas and cooperate fully with local authorities.
