Islamabad Officials Move Ahead on Faizabad Interchange Traffic Solutions
September 03, 2025
ISLAMABAD: Authorities in the capital reviewed plans on Tuesday to tackle persistent traffic congestion at the Faizabad Interchange, directing consultants to finalize a practical design for the project.
The meeting, chaired by Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa, considered three options:
-
A flyover connecting Captain Karnal Sher Khan Road with the Islamabad Expressway for Lahore-bound traffic
-
A combination of flyover and underpass
-
Addition of new slip roads
Officials indicated that the flyover option is the front-runner for approval. The CDA chairman emphasized that the final design should meet current needs and anticipate future traffic growth.
This review comes after the CDA scrapped a previous Rs. 200 million project to expand existing loops at Faizabad, opting instead for a complete remodeling of the interchange.
The meeting also touched on preparations for two other major projects: the Shaheen Chowk underpass and the G.T. Road flyover. Bidding has been completed, with contracts awarded to a joint venture of Habib Construction Services and ZKB.
Officials aim to launch the projects around September 5, though a slight delay is possible due to forecasted heavy rain.
With these initiatives, Islamabad is taking concrete steps to ease traffic congestion and improve commuter safety across major city routes.
