Six to Eight Franchise Teams Expected in Inaugural 2027 Season
Pakistan is set to take a major step toward developing professional hockey with the formal launch of the Pakistan Hockey League (PHL) in Islamabad on October 14, 2026.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced that the league’s inaugural season is planned for 2027, with six to eight franchise teams expected to participate in the first edition.
The proposed league is aimed at creating a professional and commercially sustainable structure for hockey while providing players with more opportunities to compete at a high level.
International Players Expected to Join
The PHL is being developed along the lines of established professional competitions, including the FIH Hockey Pro League and the Indian Hockey League.
According to the PHF, leading international players are expected to be contracted alongside Pakistani players. This would give local players opportunities to train and compete with international talent while gaining exposure to professional standards.
The league is also expected to bring international experts into areas such as coaching, management and other aspects of professional hockey.
Focus on Investment and Commercial Growth
The PHF has awarded the league rights to Mediacast following a competitive bidding process earlier this year.
The federation expects the franchise-based model to attract private-sector investment through team ownership and corporate sponsorships.
The league could also generate new commercial opportunities through broadcasting, digital content, merchandising, advertising, hospitality and ticket sales.
Grassroots Development Also Part of Plan
Beyond professional competition, the PHL is expected to support grassroots hockey and youth development programmes.
The PHF has said the broader objective is to establish a modern hockey ecosystem based on regular competition, professional structures, investment, performance science and player development.
The federation also believes that greater involvement of the private sector and international professionals could help build expertise across Pakistan’s hockey system.
A New Opportunity for Pakistani Players
The franchise system is expected to provide Pakistani hockey players with another competitive pathway alongside traditional national and departmental competitions.
The league could also create opportunities for coaches, support staff, sports professionals and other people working in the hockey industry.
The formal launch on October 14 will begin the process leading toward the first PHL season in 2027.
Pakistan has a long history in international hockey, and the proposed league is intended to build a modern professional structure around that tradition while creating new opportunities for players, investors and fans.
