Jasmine Paolini Leads Italy Past USA to Win Billie Jean King Cup Title
September 21, 2025
Italy are once again champions of women’s team tennis. Jasmine Paolini sealed victory for the defending champions with a straight-sets win over Jessica Pegula, as Italy defeated the United States in the Billie Jean King Cup final at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center Arena in China.
Italy Clinch Sixth Title
Italy captured its sixth Billie Jean King Cup crown after winning both singles matches, making the doubles tie unnecessary.
-
Elisabetta Cocciaretto (ranked No. 91) opened the day with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 victory against Emma Navarro.
-
Paolini (ranked No. 8) then overcame Pegula (ranked No. 7) with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph, clinching the championship.
This marks Italy’s third straight final appearance and continues their remarkable run as one of the most consistent nations in women’s tennis.
Paolini’s Match-Winning Moment
Paolini showcased nerves of steel against one of the world’s top players. She broke Pegula’s serve with a brilliant backhand down the line to take the opening set.
Serving for the match at 5-1, Paolini stumbled briefly as Pegula saved three match points and broke back. But on her fourth match point, Paolini sealed the win when Pegula’s backhand struck the net and landed wide.
The Italian star lifted her arms in triumph before joining her teammates and coaching staff for an emotional celebration with flag-waving fans.
A Missed Chance for Team USA
The United States — the most successful nation in Billie Jean King Cup history with 18 titles — has not lifted the trophy since 2017. A potential doubles showdown between Paolini and Sara Errani against Pegula and Taylor Townsend never materialized, as Italy clinched the tie early.
A Historic Victory
The victory further cements Italy’s place among the powerhouses of women’s tennis. With Paolini also reaching the French Open and Wimbledon finals in 2024, her leadership has been central to Italy’s rise on the world stage.
