Mitchell Marsh’s Century Leads Australia to T20 Series Win Over New Zealand

 October 5, 2025 |

MOUNT MAUNGANUI: Captain Mitchell Marsh delivered a brilliant performance with the bat, scoring his maiden T20 International century to guide Australia to a thrilling three-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final match at the Bay Oval on Saturday.

The win sealed a 2-0 series triumph for the visitors after the second game was washed out due to rain.

Marsh Dominates the Chase

Chasing a target of 157 runs, Marsh took full control of the innings, remaining unbeaten on 103 off just 52 balls, as Australia reached 160 for 7 in 18 overs.

The Australian skipper displayed outstanding shot selection, smashing eight fours and seven sixes despite challenging, damp conditions. His century came off the first ball of the 18th over — a milestone in his 76th T20 International.

“It’s always special to win an away series, especially in New Zealand,” Marsh said after the match. “When you’re in form, you just want to keep going. It was closer than we’d have liked, but we got there.”

Neesham’s Spell Keeps New Zealand in the Game

New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham gave his team hope with a fiery spell of 4 for 26, reducing Australia to 93 for 5 midway through the chase. However, Marsh held firm, forming crucial partnerships with Mitchell Owen (14) and Sean Abbott (13 not out) to see his side home.

For the hosts, Tim Seifert top-scored with 48 off 35 balls, while captain Michael Bracewell (26) and Neesham (25) added valuable runs late in the innings to lift New Zealand to 156 for 9.

Australia’s bowlers maintained tight control throughout the first innings, with Sean Abbott starring with 3 for 25, supported by Xavier Bartlett and Josh Hazlewood, who both claimed two wickets each.

Series Summary

Australia had earlier won the first T20 by six wickets, also thanks to Marsh’s fine form — he scored 85 runs in that match. The second fixture was abandoned due to rain, making this victory decisive in securing the series.

New Zealand captain Bracewell praised Marsh’s match-winning knock.

“We threw everything at him, but sometimes you just have to appreciate great batting,” Bracewell said.
