Sugar Prices Could Rise Again as FBR System Failures Disrupt Supply

Β Oct 8, 2025

Pakistan β€” Sugar prices in Punjab and Sindh may see another surge due to repeated shutdowns of the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Track and Trace (T&T) portal, sugar millers have warned.

The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) sent a letter to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, highlighting that the T&T portal remained offline for several days in September and last week, halting dispatch operations at major mills.

Without access to the system, mills are unable to release sugar or transport it to markets, creating serious supply chain bottlenecks. β€œIf these restrictions continue, the shortage could trigger another surge in prices,” a PSMA spokesperson said.

Millers also reported that FBR officials stationed at factory gates, particularly in southern Punjab and interior Sindh, have blocked dispatches whenever the system goes down, worsening the supply disruption.

The PSMA urged the government to restore system stability and streamline clearances to prevent nationwide sugar shortages and unnecessary price volatility in retail markets.
