Government Approves Installment Plan for Electric Bikes for Employees

The federal government has approved a plan to provide electric bikes to government employees up to BPS-16 on easy installment terms, as part of efforts to promote electric mobility in Pakistan.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where progress on electric vehicle (EV) policies was reviewed.

Push for Electric Mobility

Officials informed the meeting that the government aims to shift around 30% of vehicles to electric power within the next five years. The initiative is expected to help reduce fuel import costs and support environmental sustainability.

The prime minister directed relevant authorities to accelerate efforts to expand the use of electric vehicles and ensure transparent implementation of subsidy programs under the National Electric Vehicle Policy.

Focus on Cost Reduction and Energy Security

According to officials, the transition to electric mobility could reduce fuel import expenses by approximately $4.5 billion over time. The policy is also aimed at improving energy security and reducing environmental impact.

Industry and Infrastructure Development

The government has already issued 72 manufacturing certificates for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four for electric cars. In addition, 123 applications have been received for the establishment of EV charging stations across the country.

These developments indicate growing interest from the private sector in Pakistan’s emerging electric vehicle market.

Employee-Focused Initiative

Under the new scheme, government employees up to BPS-16 will be able to purchase electric bikes on easy installments. The plan is expected to support affordable transport options while encouraging cleaner mobility solutions.

Officials said the rollout of the scheme will be expedited in the coming phase.
