PM Shehbaz Directs Fast-Tracking of Local Battery Production for EVs and Solar Energy
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate efforts to develop local battery production and expand infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage.
Focus on EV Infrastructure
During a high-level meeting on energy security, the prime minister emphasized the need to speed up the development of EV charging infrastructure to support wider adoption across Pakistan.
He noted that transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions is becoming increasingly important for long-term planning.
Battery Storage Policy
Officials have been instructed to prepare a comprehensive policy framework to make battery storage systems more accessible. This includes solutions for storing surplus electricity generated through solar power, as well as supporting the growth of electric vehicles.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen energy security and improve efficiency in the power sector.
Shift Toward Electric Transport
The prime minister also directed that future government procurement in the transport sector should prioritize electric buses and motorcycles, signaling a shift toward environmentally friendly mobility solutions.
Encouraging Local Manufacturing
Authorities have been asked to promote domestic production of high-quality batteries to reduce reliance on imports and support the development of a local energy ecosystem.
Pilot Projects Underway
During the briefing, officials shared that two pilot projects for grid-level battery storage are currently in development. These projects are expected to play a key role in integrating energy storage into the national power system.
