FIFA World Cup 2026 Set to Kick Off Amid Ticket Price and Visa Concerns

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will begin on Thursday, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The match marks the start of a historic tournament featuring 48 teams across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The competition will run for nearly six weeks, with the final scheduled to take place in New Jersey on July 19. FIFA expects the tournament to generate record global revenue.

Concerns Over Ticket Prices

Despite the excitement, the build-up to the tournament has faced criticism over rising ticket prices. Reports suggest that some premium seats have reached very high prices, while FIFA has also highlighted the availability of lower-cost tickets starting at around $60.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the pricing structure, saying the average ticket price remains lower than many major sports events in the United States. He added that affordable options were included to ensure wider access for fans.

Visa and Security Issues

The tournament has also seen controversy related to visa restrictions. A few officials and individuals connected to teams were reportedly denied entry into the United States ahead of the competition.

Infantino acknowledged the challenges but said FIFA works closely with authorities while noting that some issues are outside the organization’s control.

Host Nations and Security Preparations

Mexico will host the opening match in a highly charged atmosphere, with more than 80,000 fans expected at Estadio Azteca. Local authorities have increased security arrangements, and teams are preparing for strong home support.

South Africa’s coach has urged his players to remain focused despite what is expected to be a loud and energetic crowd.

Teams and Favorites

Football powerhouses such as Spain, France, England, and defending champions Argentina are among the favorites to compete for the title.

Argentina will once again rely on experienced forward Lionel Messi as they aim to defend their crown.

England’s Final Preparations

England completed their warm-up matches with a convincing 3-0 win over Costa Rica. The team showed strong form ahead of the tournament, with goals from Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon, and Ollie Watkins.

England’s coach said the team is now ready to enter the competition with confidence after an intense preparation phase.
