Iran Keep FIFA World Cup Knockout Hopes Alive After Hard-Fought Draw Against Egypt

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Iran kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout hopes alive after earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Egypt in their final Group G match on Saturday.

The result was not enough to secure automatic qualification, but Iran remain in contention for a place in the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Their fate will now depend on results from other groups.

Supporters across Iran gathered early in the morning to watch the crucial match, with many following the action at public viewing venues in Tehran.

Egypt made a bright start and took the lead, putting Iran under pressure. Team Melli were handed an opportunity to equalize from the penalty spot, but the chance went begging when Mehdi Taremi was unable to convert.

Iran responded positively and soon found the equalizer through defender Ramin Rezaeian, bringing renewed hope to supporters.Iranians react as they watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G football match between Egypt and Iran in Tehran on June 27, 2026. —AFP

The second half remained tense as both teams searched for a winning goal. Iran thought they had completed a dramatic comeback in stoppage time when Shoja Khalilzadeh found the net, but the goal was ruled out, leaving the match level at the final whistle.

Despite the disappointment of missing direct qualification, many Iranian fans praised the team’s fighting spirit and determination throughout the contest.

The draw leaves Iran third in Group G behind Belgium and Egypt, who both advanced automatically to the knockout stage.

Team Melli will now wait for the conclusion of the remaining group-stage matches to learn whether their record is enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
