Lionel Messi Sets New FIFA World Cup Record with Goal in Seventh Straight Match

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Argentina captain Lionel Messi added another milestone to his remarkable career by becoming the first men’s player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.

The 39-year-old achieved the feat during Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Jordan in their final Group J match, coming off the bench to score in the second half.

Messi found the net in the 80th minute with a well-placed free kick after being fouled just outside the penalty area. His low strike beat the defensive wall and found the corner of the goal, sealing Argentina’s comfortable win.

The goal also extended Messi’s all-time men’s World Cup scoring record to 19 goals, further strengthening his place among the tournament’s greatest players.

Another Historic Milestone for Messi

The latest goal marked Messi’s 72nd career free-kick goal and his 12th from a direct free kick for Argentina.

He now has 123 international goals in 202 appearances for his country, placing him second on the all-time men’s international scoring list behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

Before this match, Messi shared the record of scoring in six consecutive World Cup games with French legend Just Fontaine and Brazilian great Jairzinho. His latest strike allowed him to move ahead of both and set a new record.

Argentina Build Momentum Before Knockout Stage

Argentina had already secured first place in Group J before facing Jordan, allowing head coach Lionel Scaloni to manage his squad while still maintaining the team’s unbeaten run.

Despite starting on the bench, Messi made an immediate impact after entering the match, helping Argentina finish the group stage with another victory and strong momentum heading into the knockout rounds.

Scaloni Praises Messi’s Consistency

After the match, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni admitted it has become increasingly difficult to describe Messi’s achievements.

“Every time I’m asked about him, I don’t really know what else to say. He continues to surprise everyone with what he achieves on the field,” Scaloni said.
