The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has named experienced forward Abu Bakar Mahmood as the new captain of the Pakistan men’s hockey team ahead of the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup.

He replaces Ammad Butt, who will continue to represent the national team as a senior player.

PHF Announces Leadership Change

According to an official statement, PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani approved the appointment following recommendations from the federation’s Professional Development Committee, which includes former Olympians Islahuddin Siddiqui and Hassan Sardar.

The federation expressed confidence that the leadership change will strengthen the team ahead of the major international tournament.

Ammad Butt to Remain Part of Squad

The PHF also acknowledged Ammad Butt’s long-standing contribution to Pakistan hockey, praising his commitment to the national team over the years.

The federation confirmed that Butt will remain an important member of the squad, bringing his experience to the team as a senior player.

Pakistan Preparing for FIH World Cup

The captaincy announcement comes shortly before the FIH Hockey World Cup, scheduled to be held in the Netherlands and Belgium from August 15 to 30.

Pakistan secured qualification for the tournament earlier this year after finishing as runners-up in the FIH World Cup Qualifiers, marking the country’s return to the competition for the first time since 2018.

The national team will begin its World Cup campaign against England on August 15, followed by matches against Wales on August 17 and traditional rivals India on August 19 in the group stage.

The PHF hopes the new leadership will help the team deliver a strong performance on the international stage.
