Aaron Donald Joins List of Sporting Greats Who Returned From Retirement
Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail
Former Los Angeles Rams defensive star Aaron Donald is making a return to the NFL after spending two years away from professional football, joining a select group of legendary athletes who came out of retirement after building Hall of Fame-level careers.
Donald announced his decision to return to the Rams at the age of 35. During his career, he established himself as one of the NFL’s most dominant defensive players, earning three AP Defensive Player of the Year awards and eight first-team All-Pro selections.
Speaking about his comeback, Donald said he believes he can still perform at a high level and play the way he has throughout his career.
His return raises questions about how successful the comeback will be. Some legendary athletes have enjoyed remarkable results after returning, while others struggled to reproduce their previous form.
Michael Jordan’s Different Comebacks
NBA legend Michael Jordan is one of the most famous examples of an athlete returning from retirement.
Jordan initially returned to basketball after his first retirement and went on to win championships during his second stint with the Chicago Bulls.
His later comeback with the Washington Wizards produced a different outcome, as the team did not reach the playoffs during his two seasons there.
Magic Johnson and Mario Lemieux
Other Hall of Fame athletes have also returned following significant breaks from competition.
Basketball star Magic Johnson returned to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996 after a four-year absence and played 32 games.
Hockey legend Mario Lemieux also made a notable comeback after stepping away from the NHL while dealing with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He returned in 2000 and played five more seasons for the Pittsburgh Penguins, adding 77 goals and 152 assists to his career statistics.
Can Donald Match the Great Comebacks?
Donald’s return is particularly interesting because of his age and the physical demands of professional football.
At 35, he will attempt to compete at the highest level after two seasons away from the NFL. His previous achievements and confidence suggest he believes he can still contribute significantly.
Whether Donald’s comeback becomes another example of a successful return or a reminder of the challenges involved in competing after retirement will become clearer once he returns to regular-season action.
