Switzerland Beat Algeria 2-0 to Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday to book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver next week.

Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye guided the Swiss side to an impressive win in a tactically disciplined performance under head coach Murat Yakin.

Switzerland took the lead in the 10th minute after winning possession deep in their own half. A quick counter-attack saw 20-year-old Johan Manzambi race down the left wing before delivering a precise pass to Embolo, who calmly finished from close range.

After going ahead, the Swiss focused on staying organized defensively, limiting Algeria’s attacking opportunities while remaining dangerous on the counter. Algeria’s best chance of the opening half came in stoppage time when Ibrahim Maza’s effort drifted just wide of the post.

The second goal arrived shortly after the restart. Algeria failed to fully clear the ball inside the penalty area, allowing Ndoye to take advantage and place a composed finish beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

Algeria attempted to respond, with captain Riyad Mahrez creating one of the team’s better opportunities, but his effort was blocked as Switzerland continued to control the contest.

Midfielder Granit Xhaka played a key role in organizing Switzerland’s defensive shape, helping his side protect the lead while launching quick attacks whenever space became available.

Switzerland nearly added a third late in the match, but substitute Fabian Rieder missed a clear chance in front of goal. The missed opportunity did not affect the outcome, as the Swiss comfortably held on for the win.

The result sends Switzerland into the knockout stage with confidence, while Algeria’s World Cup journey comes to an end after a determined campaign.
