Stephen Maguire Advances in BetVictor Championship League Title Defence

Defending champion Stephen Maguire kept his title defence alive by winning Group 19 and securing a place in the second stage of the BetVictor Championship League.
Maguire overcame an early setback after losing his opening match but responded with two convincing victories to finish at the top of his group.
The Scottish cueist, who won his seventh ranking title by defeating Joe O’Connor in last year’s Championship League final in Leicester, will now join 31 other players in the next phase of the tournament later this month.
Strong Comeback After Opening Defeat
Maguire’s campaign began with a 3-1 defeat to Anton Kazakov, putting his qualification hopes under pressure.
He bounced back in impressive fashion by defeating Onyee Ng 3-0, compiling breaks of 70 and 78.
In his final group match, Maguire produced another dominant display, beating Robbie Williams 3-0, highlighted by a superb 125 break, to claim top spot in Group 19.
Ali Carter Also Progresses
Former Championship League winner Ali Carter, who lifted the trophy in 2024, also advanced after finishing first in Group 12.
Carter opened his campaign with a 3-0 victory over Patrick Whelan, followed by a 3-1 win against Leone Crowley.
Needing only a draw in his final match against Jamie Jones, Carter secured qualification by earning enough frames to finish ahead on frame difference. A well-crafted 97 break helped him stay in control despite the match ending level.
Tournament Continues
The opening stage of the BetVictor Championship League resumes on Monday, with several top players, including Stuart Bingham and Zhou Yuelong, set to begin their campaigns as they compete for a place in the next stage of the tournament.
