Czech Mountaineer Dies During Climb on Pakistan’s Masherbrum Peak
A Czech mountaineer has died after falling while attempting to climb Masherbrum (K1), one of Pakistan’s most technically challenging peaks in the Karakoram Range.
The climber, Bansky Jaroslav, was part of an international expedition attempting to summit the 7,821-meter mountain when the accident occurred near Camp 1 on Thursday, according to sources at the base camp.
Accident Confirmed by Authorities
DIG Baltistan Tufail Ahmed Mir confirmed the incident, stating that the climber fell while the expedition team was ascending the mountain.
Officials said Jaroslav’s family has arrived in Islamabad, while authorities are considering arrangements regarding the recovery of his body from the mountain and its transportation to Skardu.
One of Pakistan’s Most Challenging Peaks
Masherbrum is regarded as one of the most demanding mountains in the Karakoram due to its difficult terrain and technical climbing requirements.
According to reports, Jaroslav’s team was the first expedition to attempt the peak in nearly five decades.
Second Mountaineering Fatality This Season
The incident marks the second reported climbing fatality in Gilgit-Baltistan during Pakistan’s 2026 summer mountaineering season.
Earlier this season, a French climber lost his life in an avalanche while attempting to climb K6 Peak in Ghanche District.
Despite these incidents, Pakistan’s summer climbing season continues, with mountaineers from around the world visiting the country to attempt some of the world’s highest and most challenging peaks.
