NDMA Issues Weather Advisory for Heavy Rainfall Across Pakistan Until July 23
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in several parts of Pakistan from July 19 to July 23.
According to the advisory, strengthening monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea, combined with an approaching western weather system, are expected to increase rainfall across northern and central regions of the country.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Northern Areas
The NDMA has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in several areas of:
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli, Bhimber, Poonch, and Mirpur.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Mardan, Nowshera, and nearby districts.
- Gilgit-Baltistan, including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamer, Ghizer, Ghanche, and Shigar.
Urban Flooding Risk in Major Cities
The authority has warned that heavy rainfall may lead to temporary urban flooding and water accumulation in several cities, including:
- Islamabad
- Rawalpindi
- Lahore
- Peshawar
- Gujranwala
- Sialkot
- Faisalabad
- Multan
Low-lying areas, underpasses, and locations with limited drainage capacity may experience waterlogging during periods of intense rainfall.
Rivers and Local Streams May See Higher Water Levels
The NDMA has also advised residents living near rivers, streams, and seasonal waterways to remain cautious, as rainfall could increase water levels in the Chenab, Jhelum, and Kabul rivers.
Local streams and nullahs in parts of Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, and some areas of Balochistan may also experience higher flows.
Possibility of Landslides in Mountainous Regions
Continuous rainfall may increase the likelihood of landslides and falling rocks in mountainous areas, particularly in:
- Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
- Gilgit-Baltistan
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir
- Murree
- Galiyat
Travel disruptions are possible if roads are temporarily blocked due to debris or landslides.
Safety Advice for the Public
The NDMA has encouraged the public to:
- Monitor official weather updates before traveling.
- Exercise extra caution in hilly and mountainous regions.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
- Stay away from rivers, streams, flooded roads, and fast-flowing water.
- Follow guidance issued by local authorities and emergency services.
Officials have advised tourists planning visits to northern or recreational areas to remain informed about weather conditions and choose safe accommodation while following local safety instructions.
