Pakistan Allocates E-Band Spectrum to Support 5G Network Expansion
The Government of Pakistan has allocated E-Band spectrum to the country’s Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) to support the expansion of 5G services and improve high-capacity wireless connectivity.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the allocation is intended to strengthen the infrastructure required for next-generation mobile networks following the country’s recent 5G spectrum auction.
Supporting 5G Infrastructure
The E-Band spectrum will primarily be used for wireless backhaul, enabling telecom operators to transfer large volumes of network data between mobile towers without relying solely on fiber-optic connections.
PTA says this approach can help operators expand 5G coverage more efficiently, particularly in locations where fiber deployment may not be immediately available.
Current Fiber Connectivity Levels
According to PTA data, the current tower fiberization level across Pakistan’s mobile sector is approximately 17.9%.
Operator-wise figures include:
- Jazz: 22%
- Zong (CMPak): 19%
- Telenor Pakistan: 16%
- Ufone: 9%
Under the country’s Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS)/5G licensing framework, operators are required to increase their Fiber-to-the-Site (FTTS) ratio to at least 20% during Phase I (2026–2028). The target will gradually rise to 35% by Phase IV (2032–2035).
Flexible Deployment Options
PTA officials said telecom companies can decide whether to use fiber-optic infrastructure or E-Band wireless links based on local network requirements.
The E-Band spectrum is expected to provide high-capacity connections that can support the growing data demands of 5G services while offering greater flexibility in network deployment.
No Additional Spectrum Charges
According to PTA officials, the allocation of E-Band spectrum does not involve additional spectrum charges for telecom operators.
The Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) will continue to manage approvals for microwave spectrum allocations under the existing regulatory framework.
Improving Future Connectivity
The government is also continuing efforts to facilitate network expansion by supporting policies related to Right of Way (RoW), making it easier for operators to develop telecommunications infrastructure.
Officials believe that the combination of expanded fiber networks and E-Band wireless backhaul will help strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and improve the quality, speed, and coverage of 5G services across the country.
