Eight People Lose Their Lives as Heavy Rain Affects Central Punjab
Heavy rainfall across several cities in central Punjab on Tuesday resulted in the loss of eight lives and left 14 people injured, according to rescue officials. The rain also caused widespread urban flooding, disrupted traffic, and affected daily life in several districts.
Gujranwala Records Highest Rainfall
Among the affected cities, Gujranwala received 238mm of rainfall, the highest in the region and reportedly the city’s largest rainfall in the past decade. Gujrat recorded 153mm, while heavy showers also affected Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, and Pakpattan.
The prolonged rainfall led to water accumulation on major roads and in residential areas, causing significant disruptions to transportation and commercial activities.
Rain-Related Incidents Reported
According to rescue authorities, most casualties occurred due to roof and wall collapses, electrocution, and drowning in rainwater.
In Gujranwala, six people, including several children, lost their lives in separate incidents, while multiple others sustained injuries after buildings and boundary walls collapsed during the heavy rain.
In Pakpattan, two children died and their mother was injured when the roof of their home collapsed during the downpour.
In Lahore, four workers were rescued with minor injuries after the roof of a plastic manufacturing factory collapsed in the Gulshan-e-Ravi area. Rescue teams responded quickly and provided first aid at the scene.
Urban Flooding Disrupts Daily Life
Heavy rain caused severe waterlogging in Gujranwala and Gujrat, submerging major roads and residential streets. The flooding affected traffic flow, business activities, and routine public movement across the cities.
Officials also noted that ongoing development work on parts of GT Road in Gujranwala contributed to traffic congestion during the rainfall.
Rainfall Recorded in Lahore
Several areas of Lahore also experienced moderate to heavy rainfall.
Some of the highest recorded rainfall included:
- Nishtar Town: 84mm
- Johar Town: 51mm
- Lahore Airport: 36mm
- Kahna: 34.4mm
- Upper Mall: 33mm
Rain was also reported in Gulshan-e-Ravi, Samanabad, Gulberg, Iqbal Town, Jail Road, Mughalpura, Defence Road, and several other localities.
Authorities Advise Caution
Rescue and local authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during periods of heavy rainfall, avoid flooded roads where possible, and report emergencies to the relevant rescue services.
