Jasper Philipsen Ends Winless Run with Tour de France Stage 17 Victory

VOIRON: Belgian sprinter Jasper Philipsen returned to winning ways by claiming victory in Stage 17 of the 2026 Tour de France, delivering a powerful sprint finish after an impressive lead-out from teammate Mathieu van der Poel.
The Alpecin–Premier Tech rider crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Mauro Schmid and Olav Kooij, securing his first stage win of this year’s Tour after several close finishes.
Philipsen Breaks Through After Near Misses
The victory marked Philipsen’s 11th career Tour de France stage win and ensured he has claimed at least one stage victory in each of the last five editions of the race.
The 28-year-old admitted the opening stages of this year’s Tour had been frustrating despite arriving in excellent condition.
“I prepared really well and felt in great shape, but the first stage was difficult. After so many close finishes, it’s great to finally win for the team,” Philipsen said after the race.
Van der Poel Plays Key Role
Former world champion Mathieu van der Poel once again delivered a perfectly timed lead-out, helping Philipsen launch his sprint at exactly the right moment.
Van der Poel said the team focused on staying near the front throughout the demanding stage and keeping riders in every important breakaway group.
Their strategy paid off as Philipsen produced a dominant finish in the final meters.
Green Jersey Battle Tightens
The stage victory also boosted Philipsen’s chances in the Points Classification.
By earning 50 points, he moved to within seven points of current green jersey leader Mads Pedersen, setting up an exciting battle for the sprinters’ competition during the remaining stages.
Pogacar Maintains Overall Lead
Overall race leader Tadej Pogacar safely finished with the main peloton, preserving his advantage in the General Classification.
However, UAE Team Emirates-XRG received a setback after key teammate Adam Yates struggled with illness and crossed the finish line more than 26 minutes behind the stage winner.
Stage Packed with Attacks
The 174.7-kilometer route from Chambéry to Voiron featured aggressive racing throughout the day.
A late breakaway attempted to stay clear before Jasper Stuyven launched a solo attack inside the closing kilometers.
Despite his efforts, the chasing group caught him less than four kilometers from the finish, setting up a bunch sprint where Philipsen proved the fastest rider.
