Flood Damage Disrupts Rail Services Between Lahore and Faisalabad
Railway services between Lahore and Faisalabad have been suspended after heavy monsoon rains and flooding damaged sections of the railway infrastructure, according to Pakistan Railways officials.
Floodwaters caused erosion beneath railway bridges on the Lahore–Shahdara–Sheikhupura–Faisalabad route, making train operations unsafe until repair work is completed.
Rail Operations Suspended
Pakistan Railways said passenger and freight services on the affected section have been temporarily suspended after flood-related damage was reported at multiple locations.
Officials stated that engineering teams will begin restoration work once floodwaters recede and conditions become safe for repairs.
Train Cancellations and Route Diversions
As a result of the disruption:
- Train services operating directly between Lahore and Faisalabad have been suspended.
- Some Lahore–Karachi services that normally travel via Faisalabad are being diverted through Sahiwal and Khanewal.
- Passengers with confirmed reservations for cancelled trains have been advised to obtain refunds through Pakistan Railways reservation offices.
Railway authorities also said passengers should check the latest schedules with railway inquiry centers before traveling.
Alternative Routes for Major Trains
According to Pakistan Railways, several long-distance trains will operate on alternate routes until the damaged railway section is restored.
The Karakoram Express and Shalimar Express will temporarily travel via Raiwind, Sahiwal, and Khanewal, bypassing Faisalabad.
Other affected services, including the Mianwali Express, will also follow revised routes during the restoration period.
Restoration Work to Begin After Water Recedes
Officials said floodwaters damaged the supporting ground beneath railway bridges after nearby streams overflowed during the recent spell of heavy rainfall.
Engineering teams have been deployed to assess the damage and will begin repair work as soon as water levels allow safe access to the affected sites.
Pakistan Railways said every effort is being made to restore normal train operations as quickly as possible.
Flood Situation Across Pakistan
The latest flood monitoring reports indicate that the Ravi River is flowing at a medium flood level in some areas, while the Chenab River remains at low flood levels at several monitoring points.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also warned that additional rainfall is possible in the upper catchment areas of major rivers, including parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Tarbela Reservoir Water Level Rises
Recent rainfall has also increased the water level in Tarbela Dam, bringing the reservoir closer to its maximum conservation level.
According to official figures, the reservoir’s water level rose significantly over the past day, while authorities continue to monitor inflows, outflows, and storage levels as part of ongoing flood management efforts.
Officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay informed through official weather and flood advisories as the monsoon season continues.
