Commonwealth Games 2026: Sinesipho Dambile Tops 200m Qualifiers as Zharnel Hughes Misses Final

GLASGOW: South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile delivered an impressive performance to lead the qualifiers for the men’s 200m final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, while England’s Zharnel Hughes was surprisingly eliminated in the semi-finals.
The athletics competition at Scotstoun Stadium produced one of the biggest upsets of the event as Hughes, one of the pre-race favourites, was unable to secure a place in the final.
Hughes Falls Short in Semi-finals
Despite entering the competition with the fastest personal best among the athletes, Hughes finished sixth in his semi-final after recording a time of 20.67 seconds, ending his campaign earlier than expected.
The result means the English sprinter will not compete in Friday’s men’s 200m final.
Dambile Leads the Field
South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile posted the fastest time across the semi-finals, winning his race in 19.82 seconds to comfortably qualify for the final.
After the race, Dambile expressed satisfaction with his performance and said his primary goal was to qualify safely while conserving energy for the medal race.
He added that he still feels capable of producing an even stronger performance in the final.
Aaron Brown Also Impresses
Canada’s Aaron Brown also advanced with confidence after running 19.90 seconds, the second-fastest time of the semi-finals.
Brown said he was pleased to break the 20-second barrier and believes he is well prepared for the upcoming final.

The men’s 200m final will feature a competitive lineup that includes athletes from several Commonwealth nations.
