Harry Charles Wins Unexpected World Championship Bronze in Show Jumping

British equestrian Harry Charles completed an impressive turnaround at the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026, winning a bronze medal in individual jumping after initially believing he might not even compete at the event.

Just three months before the championships, the 27-year-old Briton was considering taking a holiday during the week of the competition. By Sunday, August 23, he was celebrating a place on the individual jumping podium.

A key part of his success was his partnership with LT Holst Freda, a 12-year-old mare whom Charles credits with changing the direction of his season.

A New Partnership Makes the Difference

Charles had previously enjoyed major success with Romeo 88, helping Great Britain win team jumping gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Romeo has since retired, leaving Charles looking for a new horse for the next stage of his career.

Freda was initially intended for Charles’ wife, Eve Jobs, who became interested in trying the horse after returning to England.

Charles and his father, former Olympic team champion Peter Charles, saw Freda before Eve arrived. Charles quickly developed a strong impression of the mare.

According to Charles, Eve later asked whether he could take Freda to the World Championships in Aachen. Although he initially felt that three months was too little time to prepare, his father believed it was possible.

Strong Results Build Confidence

Charles and Freda developed a strong partnership in a relatively short period.

A double-clear performance in Rotterdam in June provided an early indication that the combination could compete at the highest level.

The Aachen World Championships then provided the pair with their biggest test yet, but they continued to perform strongly and eventually secured the individual bronze medal.

Charles Praises His Horse

Charles described Freda as an intelligent horse that remains calm in challenging situations.

He said the mare had arrived at a crucial point in his career and had transformed his prospects for the season.

The bronze medal represents another major achievement for Charles, who is a two-time Olympian and already has an Olympic team gold medal to his name.

His unexpected success in Aachen also highlights how quickly a new horse-and-rider partnership can develop when the combination finds the right chemistry.
