Iran Signals Willingness to Resume Talks if US Honours Interim Agreement
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran is prepared to respond positively if the United States returns to its commitments under an interim agreement reached between the two countries in June.
Pezeshkian made the remarks on Tuesday while attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Washington.
According to Iranian state media, Pezeshkian said Iran would immediately reciprocate if the US restored its commitments under the memorandum of understanding.
Iran Calls for Diplomatic Solution
The interim agreement was intended to provide a framework for further negotiations aimed at ending the conflict between Iran and the United States. However, the arrangement later broke down, with both sides accusing each other of failing to meet its terms.
Iran has continued to call for a negotiated solution and has maintained that the United States should first return to the commitments outlined in the agreement.
Pezeshkian said earlier in Bishkek that continued conflict was not in anyone’s interest and indicated that Tehran remained open to diplomatic efforts.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also urged Washington to return to the commitments made under the agreement, saying this could help put negotiations back on track.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Key Issue
Tehran has linked the resumption of unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to the implementation of the interim agreement.
The waterway is an important international shipping route and plays a major role in global energy supplies.
The latest comments from Iranian officials come after renewed military exchanges between Iran and the United States.
US President Donald Trump said there would be a response to the Iranian attacks, while also indicating that the latest developments did not necessarily mean a return to a full-scale conflict.
