Australia Drops Marnus Labuschagne for Zimbabwe and South Africa ODI Series

Australia has left experienced batter Marnus Labuschagne out of its squad for the upcoming six-match ODI tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The decision comes after a difficult period of form for Labuschagne, who was an important member of Australia’s 2023 World Cup-winning team. His omission also comes at a time when his position in Australia’s Test side is facing increased scrutiny.
Australia will play three ODIs in Zimbabwe followed by three matches in South Africa this month. The team will then face South Africa in a three-Test series in October, with the Test squad expected to be announced separately.
Young Players Get Opportunity
Australia’s selectors have used the ODI tour to give several promising players an opportunity to gain international experience ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Teenage batter Ollie Peake, along with all-rounders Joel Davies and Cooper Connolly, have been included in the 17-member squad.
Selectors believe the six-match tour will be an important part of Australia’s preparations for the upcoming World Cup, which will be held in the same countries.
Senior Players Return
Several established players are also returning to Australia’s ODI setup.
Mitchell Marsh, Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood have been included after missing Australia’s earlier ODI assignments in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will feature only during the South African leg of the tour as Australia’s management continues to carefully manage their workloads.
The squad also includes several other fast-bowling options, including Spencer Johnson, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett and Billy Stanlake.
Adam Zampa has been selected as the only specialist spinner, while Matthew Kuhnemann has been left out.
Labuschagne’s Test Future Remains Unclear
Australia chief selector George Bailey said Labuschagne’s exclusion from the ODI squad was considered separately from decisions regarding the Test team.
Bailey acknowledged Labuschagne’s previous contributions in limited-overs cricket but said there was not enough room for him in the current ODI combination.
Labuschagne’s Test position will be considered separately ahead of Australia’s upcoming assignments, with the team scheduled to tour India for a five-Test series in January and February.

Australia A Squads for India
Australia has also announced its ‘A’ squads for the upcoming tour of India.
The four-day squad includes Brendan Doggett, Peter Handscomb, Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, Todd Murphy, Jhye Richardson and Josh Philippe, among others.
The Australia A one-day squad features players including Aaron Hardie, Mitch Owen, Tanveer Sangha, Spencer Johnson, Nathan McSweeney and Josh Philippe.
