NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Championship Set to Decide 2027 World Cup and LA 2028 Olympic Berths

Moncton: The race for qualification to major international volleyball events will intensify on September 11 as the 2026 NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Continental Championship gets underway in Moncton, Canada.
The tournament will run until September 16, with teams competing for continental honors as well as qualification opportunities for the 2027 FIVB World Cup and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Two Major Qualification Opportunities
Eight teams have been divided into two groups of four for the continental championship.
The top three teams in the final standings will earn places in the 2027 FIVB World Cup in Poland.
In addition, the top four teams, excluding the United States because it will host the 2028 Olympics, will advance to the NORCECA Continental Qualifier on September 18 and 19.
The qualifier will feature two semifinals and two classification matches, with one Olympic berth available for the winner.
Championship Format
The two group winners will automatically advance to the semifinals.
Teams finishing second and third in each group will compete in crossover quarterfinals. The quarterfinal winners will join the group winners in the semifinals.
The remaining teams will play classification matches to determine positions from fifth through eighth.
The results will also determine which four eligible teams move forward to the Olympic qualifying tournament.
Canada Leads Group A
Host nation Canada, ranked 19th in the world, will headline Group A.
Canada are aiming to win their second NORCECA continental title after claiming their first championship in 2015. The team has also collected seven silver and 15 bronze medals in the competition.
The Canadians finished runners-up at the previous two editions in 2021 and 2023.
Canada will be joined in Group A by Puerto Rico, Mexico and Curaçao.
Puerto Rico are ranked 22nd in the world and won their first NORCECA title in 2021. Their previous record also includes one silver and two bronze medals.
Mexico, ranked 25th, are yet to win the continental championship but have earned three silver and three bronze medals. Curaçao, ranked 64th, complete the group.
USA Among the Favorites
The United States, currently ranked fifth in the world, enter the tournament as one of the strongest contenders for the title.
The Americans are the defending NORCECA champions after winning the 2023 edition, which gave them their 10th continental title. Their overall record also includes 11 silver and three bronze medals.
USA are the only NORCECA team to have won Olympic gold in men’s volleyball, achieving the feat in 1984, 1988 and 2008.
They are also the only team from the confederation to have won the FIVB World Championship, claiming the title in 1986. The United States won bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics and finished as runners-up in the 2026 Volleyball Nations League.
Cuba Pose Strong Challenge in Group B
Cuba, ranked 15th in the world, are expected to provide the biggest challenge to the United States in Group B.
Cuba are the most successful team in NORCECA Championship history, having won the tournament 16 times, most recently in 2019.
They have also finished on the podium 10 additional times, including five silver and five bronze medals. Cuba finished third at the 2023 edition.
At major international competitions, Cuba have won an Olympic bronze medal in 1976, along with two World Championship silver medals and two bronze medals.
Dominican Republic and Guatemala Complete Group B
The Dominican Republic, ranked 48th in the world, and Guatemala, ranked 98th, complete Group B.
The Dominican Republic won a silver medal at the 2017 NORCECA Championship, while Guatemala will be looking to make an impact against some of the region’s strongest volleyball nations.
With qualification places for both the 2027 World Cup and Los Angeles 2028 Olympics at stake, the competition in Canada is expected to produce intense battles throughout the tournament.
