PIMS Hospital Falls Short in Performance Audit
The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has fallen short of its performance targets, with an audit showing that the hospital achieved compliance on only 39.7% of the assessed indicators.
The audit found that around 60% of the indicators did not meet the required standards, while the acceptable compliance benchmark was set at 90%.
Prime Minister Orders Three-Month Improvement Plan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed relevant authorities to implement immediate measures to improve PIMS within three months.
The improvement plan will include upgrades to the hospital’s fire safety system and measures to improve various operational areas.
The prime minister also directed officials to bring PIMS closer to international healthcare standards and seek technical assistance and recommendations from the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) regarding fire safety improvements.
WHO Recommendations to Be Considered
During the meeting, officials were also briefed on recommendations included in a World Health Organization (WHO) report.
The prime minister instructed authorities to review these recommendations and ensure that appropriate measures are implemented at the hospital.
The improvement plan is also expected to address the availability of medicines and ensure that hospital facilities are provided to patients free of cost where applicable.
Long-Term Plan for PIMS
The prime minister called for personnel with a strong professional reputation to be appointed at PIMS and directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive long-term plan for the hospital.
The plan is intended to address the institution’s operational and administrative challenges and improve the overall quality of healthcare services.
Polyclinic Hospital Audit Ordered
Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an audit of Polyclinic Hospital to identify any irregularities.
Authorities have also been directed to prepare a restructuring plan for the hospital after reviewing the audit findings.
Fire Safety Audits Across Islamabad
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been directed to ensure that public and private hospitals across Islamabad comply with fire safety requirements.
The CDA and other relevant departments were also instructed to conduct fire safety audits of public and private offices, buildings and other facilities across the capital.
Authorities will be required to ensure that necessary safety measures are implemented following the audits.
