CDA Plans Double-Decker Electric Bus Service for Islamabad Tourism
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is considering the launch of a new double-decker electric bus service in Islamabad as part of efforts to promote tourism and provide visitors with a convenient way to explore the capital.
CDA sources said the authority has approached Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) to conduct a feasibility study and prepare cost estimates for the proposed buses. The final decision will be taken after the authority receives the technical and financial assessment.
Four Electric Buses Proposed Initially
Under the preliminary plan, the CDA is considering starting the service with four double-decker electric buses.
The proposed tourist route would cover around 25 kilometres, beginning from F-9 Park and connecting several well-known attractions in Islamabad. The route is expected to include destinations such as Faisal Mosque, Lok Virsa and Shakarparian.
These locations are among the city’s major recreational and cultural attractions, with CDA also highlighting Shakarparian and Lok Virsa among Islamabad’s key destinations.
HIT to Assess Cost and Feasibility
The CDA is currently waiting for input from HIT before deciding how to proceed with the project.
Officials have indicated that the buses could potentially be imported, including from China, depending on the outcome of the feasibility study and procurement assessment.
The proposed vehicles would be fully electric, supporting the authority’s wider focus on cleaner and more environmentally sustainable transport in Islamabad.
Service Could Start Within Three Months
If the proposal receives the required approvals and the procurement process moves ahead as planned, the tourist bus service could become operational within around three months.
However, the timeline remains tentative because the project has not yet been finalised. The CDA will determine the next steps after reviewing the feasibility report and estimated costs.
Islamabad Already Has Electric Bus Network
The proposed tourist service would add to Islamabad’s existing electric public transport network.
The CDA already operates electric bus services across numerous routes in the capital. The authority has also been working on improving public transport information, including route and stop details through its official mobile application.
The CDA has separately been pursuing initiatives aimed at strengthening Islamabad’s tourism and recreational facilities. Recent development efforts have included improvements around F-9 Park, Lake View Park, Daman-e-Koh and other visitor destinations.
Previous Tourist Bus Plans
Islamabad has previously seen proposals for tourist bus services, including double-decker operations covering major attractions.
The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad has also highlighted sightseeing tours using double-decker buses to connect visitors with locations such as Faisal Mosque, Pakistan Monument, Lok Virsa and other landmarks.
The new CDA proposal, if approved, would introduce an electric version specifically focused on tourism and could provide visitors with another option for exploring Islamabad.
