Brentford Beat Chelsea 3-0 as Alonso Faces Defensive Concerns

Brentford recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Friday, exposing defensive weaknesses in Xabi Alonso’s team and ending their positive start under the new manager.
Chelsea had made an impressive beginning under Alonso, but their recent league form has dipped. The Blues have collected just one point from their last three Premier League matches.
The result lifted Brentford into third place in the Premier League standings.
Brentford Take Control After Half-Time
The first half ended without a goal, with neither goalkeeper facing significant pressure.
Brentford, however, became increasingly dangerous after the interval and eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark.
Chelsea struggled to deal with a set-piece as a corner from Mikkel Damsgaard created an opening. Jaidon Anthony headed the ball into an unguarded net to give Brentford the lead.
Thiago Doubles Brentford’s Advantage
Chelsea attempted to respond but were unable to create enough clear chances.
Brentford then exploited space on the counter-attack. Kevin Schade found himself through on goal but saw his effort saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
The rebound fell to Igor Thiago, who made no mistake from the second opportunity to double Brentford’s lead.
The goal ended Thiago’s wait for a Premier League goal this season. The Brazilian striker scored 25 goals last season and subsequently earned a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad.
Carvalho Completes Chelsea Defeat
Brentford continued to threaten as Chelsea pushed forward in search of a comeback.
In stoppage time, Schade’s low delivery was deflected into the path of Fabio Carvalho, who finished high past Martinez to complete the 3-0 win.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews praised his players after the match, saying he had confidence in the team’s approach and was pleased to see their work produce results.
Alonso Calls for Improvement
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso acknowledged that his side needs greater consistency.
The former Real Madrid coach said Chelsea were not maintaining their level throughout matches and pointed to improvements needed in mentality, tactics and overall performance.
Alonso had previously said he wanted his team to play more controlled matches after their entertaining opening fixtures produced 19 goals across the first four games.
Chelsea’s attacking options were also affected by the absence of Joao Pedro, who is recovering from a knee injury. Brentford managed to keep key Chelsea attackers Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers relatively quiet.
Brentford Continue Strong Start
The victory keeps Brentford near the top of the Premier League table. They have now recorded another 3-0 win after defeating Tottenham Hotspur by the same scoreline on the opening weekend.
Brentford currently sit behind Arsenal and Manchester City in the standings.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will use the upcoming three-week international break to regroup after conceding at least two goals in each of their first five league matches under Alonso.
The defeat leaves Alonso with several areas to address as Chelsea look to improve their defensive record and return to winning ways after the international break.
