IHC Seeks Review of 102-Hour Weekly Duty Schedule for Doctors

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has raised concerns over doctors being required to work as many as 102 hours per week, calling for a review of extended duty schedules.

Justice Raja Inam Amin Minhas made the observations during a hearing related to the working hours of doctors.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), in its response submitted to the court, highlighted concerns about the effects of prolonged working hours on doctors’ alertness and professional performance.

Following the proceedings, the court referred the matter to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) for further consideration.

The PMDC has been directed to review existing working-hour arrangements for doctors and submit recommendations to the government.

During the hearing, Justice Minhas described a 102-hour weekly schedule as inhumane and emphasised the need for relevant regulatory and government bodies to examine the issue.

The proceedings have renewed attention on the working conditions of doctors, particularly medical professionals undergoing postgraduate training who may be required to work extended shifts.

The PMDC’s recommendations are expected to help inform any future decisions regarding doctors’ duty hours and working arrangements.
