Bavuma Looks to Inexperienced South Africa Pace Attack Against Australia

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma believes his team’s inexperienced fast-bowling group will need to make the most of its opportunity when the Proteas face Australia in a three-match ODI series.
The opening match is scheduled to take place in Durban on Thursday, with South Africa entering the series without several of their regular fast bowlers.
South Africa Hit by Pace Bowling Injuries
The hosts will be without several key seamers due to injuries. Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman are unavailable because of hamstring problems, while Nandre Burger is also sidelined with a back injury.
As a result, South Africa have turned to a less experienced group that includes Lizaad Williams, Marco Jansen, Duan Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch and Nqobani Mokoena.
Collectively, the available bowlers have only featured in 72 ODIs, leaving the team with a relatively inexperienced pace attack against a strong Australian side.
Bavuma said South Africa would need to manage the workload of its bowlers carefully throughout the series.
“We have to make the best use of the seam-bowling resources available to us,” he said, stressing the importance of using the attack intelligently.
Fast Bowling Remains a South African Strength
South Africa have traditionally built a strong reputation around their fast bowlers, and Bavuma said the team still wants visiting sides to face a challenging pace attack when playing in the country.
He acknowledged that injuries had forced the selectors to look beyond the established group but said the available bowlers still offered several options.
The captain also highlighted the importance of managing workloads as the team prepares for a busy period of international cricket.
Limited ODI Action in 2026
South Africa have had relatively little ODI cricket this year. Before the Australia series, they had played only three ODIs in 2026, all against Namibia, winning the series 3-0 earlier this month.
The upcoming matches against Australia therefore provide an important opportunity for the squad to regain rhythm in the 50-over format.
With South Africa set to host the 2027 Cricket World Cup, Bavuma said the team is focused on building consistency ahead of the tournament.
“It has been some time since this ODI group played together,” the captain said, adding that the players were keen to maintain the team’s recent record in the format.
World Cup Plans Taking Shape
Bavuma indicated that South Africa already have an idea of the core group they want to take into the 2027 World Cup.
While the team is expected to introduce some new players during the build-up, the captain suggested that the main combination would remain relatively stable.
South Africa are expected to get a clearer indication of their likely World Cup squad during the ODI series against England in January 2027.
For now, the Australia series gives several emerging fast bowlers a chance to establish themselves and strengthen their claims for a place in the longer-term ODI setup.
