Harry Kane matches England cap record, now eyes Ronaldo’s international goals record

LONDON: England captain Harry Kane has matched Peter Shilton’s record for the most appearances for the national team and says he is not ruling out a challenge for Cristiano Ronaldo’s international goalscoring record.

Kane reached 125 England caps during Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic at Wembley. The striker marked the milestone in style by scoring twice, taking his international goal tally to 91.

The 33-year-old is already England’s all-time leading goalscorer, while Ronaldo currently holds the world record with 146 international goals for Portugal.

Kane acknowledged that catching Ronaldo would be a major challenge but said he remains focused on extending his career and continuing to contribute to England.

“We’ll see how far we can get,” Kane said. “It’s an awful long way away right now, but who knows? I’m in great shape.”

The Bayern Munich forward added that he intends to assess his future season by season, depending on his fitness and ability to help the national team.

Kane made his England debut in 2015 and scored just 79 seconds after coming on against Lithuania. Eleven years later, he described reaching Shilton’s appearance record as something beyond what he had imagined when his international career began.

England manager Thomas Tuchel also praised Kane’s achievement, saying the striker deserved the recognition that came with reaching such a significant milestone.

Kane said his progress had been built on a combination of talent, hard work, confidence and a determination to maintain high standards throughout his career.

His club career has also reached new heights since joining Bayern Munich. The former Tottenham striker recently became the fastest player to score 100 Bundesliga goals, reaching the milestone in just 98 league appearances and breaking a record that had stood for 49 years.

Despite his long list of achievements, Kane believes he can still improve and is determined to continue pushing himself.

“I’m not going to stop,” he said. “I’m going to keep pushing and see where it takes me.”
