Security measures disrupt routine life around Rawalpindi stadium

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Strict security arrangements for the tri-nation cricket series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium have affected daily life and business activities in areas surrounding the venue.

Allama Iqbal Park, one of the city’s major public parks, has been closed near the stadium, preventing residents from using the area for recreation and morning walks. The nearby food street and food market have also been shut, while a petrol station in the vicinity has been sealed.

The Metro bus station near the stadium has been temporarily closed, while Double Road has been restricted for both vehicles and pedestrians. Access to the road leading towards the church has also been blocked.

Several shops, markets and workshops along Double Road have remained closed due to the security arrangements. Barriers have been installed around the park, further limiting movement in the area.

Residents, traders, food-street operators, hotel owners and roadside food sellers have expressed concern over the impact of the restrictions on their daily activities and businesses.

Some local residents and traders have called for the stadium to be relocated, arguing that similar restrictions during cricket matches have affected normal life in the area in recent years.

They urged authorities to develop a security plan that can protect players and spectators while allowing residents and businesses to continue their routine activities.

Food-street traders Asghar Ali and Rehman said their businesses were being affected despite the food street being located away from the main stadium area. They appealed to the authorities to ensure that security measures do not unnecessarily damage local businesses.
