Families of HIV-Affected Children Call for Investigation and Better Medical Support
KARACHI: Families of children who tested positive for HIV after receiving treatment at a government hospital have called for a transparent investigation, improved healthcare, and financial assistance during a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club.
According to the families and their legal representative, around 200 children were affected in the incident linked to Kulsoom Bai Valika Hospital, a facility operated by the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI). Some of the children were born at the hospital, while others had been admitted for treatment of unrelated medical conditions.
The families said they are seeking accountability, completion of the official inquiry, and legal action if negligence is confirmed. They also requested continued access to quality medical care and financial support for affected households.
Families Describe Ongoing Challenges
Parents said caring for children living with HIV has placed significant emotional and financial pressure on their families.
Several parents explained that frequent medical appointments and recurring illnesses have affected their ability to work, resulting in reduced household income. They also expressed concerns about social stigma and difficulties their children have faced in education and daily life.
One parent shared that independent medical testing confirmed the child’s HIV diagnosis after seeking a second opinion from another hospital.
Calls for Transparent Inquiry
Representing the families, Advocate Tariq Mansoor urged authorities to complete the official inquiry without further delay and make its findings public.
He also called for the registration of a formal criminal case if the investigation establishes evidence of medical negligence, saying the legal process should be allowed to proceed in accordance with applicable laws.
The families further requested that authorities ensure all affected children receive appropriate long-term medical treatment and monitoring.
Concerns Over Medical Safety Standards
The lawyer highlighted the importance of following safe injection practices and enforcing existing healthcare regulations designed to reduce the risk of infections.
He said the Sindh Regulation and Control of Disposable Syringes Act, 2010, was introduced to promote the use of single-use safety syringes and strengthen patient protection. He urged the government to fully implement the law and improve oversight of medical facilities.
Appeal for Government Support
The families said they have approached several government departments and healthcare authorities seeking assistance. They are requesting continued medical treatment, financial relief for affected households, and timely completion of the investigation.
Their legal representative also said international organizations concerned with children’s welfare and public health have been informed about the situation, with the hope that additional support may help improve access to healthcare for the affected children.
The families said their primary goal is to ensure proper medical care, accountability where required by law, and stronger patient safety measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
