Paraguay Shock Germany in Penalty Shootout to Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Paraguay pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Germany 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure a place in the Round of 16.

The Round of 32 clash finished 1-1 after extra time at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, with Paraguay holding their composure in the shootout to eliminate the four-time world champions. The victory marks Paraguay’s first appearance in the World Cup knockout stages since 2010.

Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill delivered an outstanding performance throughout the match, making several crucial saves before becoming the hero in the penalty shootout. Gill denied attempts from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade, giving his team the advantage.

The shootout remained tense as Paraguay missed two opportunities to seal the victory early. Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer kept his side in contention by saving Fabian Balbuena’s penalty, forcing the contest into a sixth round.

However, Germany’s Jonathan Tah sent his penalty over the crossbar, allowing Jose Canale to calmly convert the decisive spot-kick and send Paraguay into the last 16.

Gill also impressed during open play, producing six saves across 120 minutes to frustrate Germany’s attack.

Paraguay took the lead just before halftime when Julio Enciso headed home in the 42nd minute. After Neuer cleared an initial corner, Paraguay recycled possession and delivered another cross that Enciso converted with a well-placed header.

Germany found an equalizer in the 54th minute. Florian Wirtz created space on the edge of the area before delivering a cross that Kai Havertz guided into the bottom corner with a header.

Germany appeared to complete the comeback during extra time when Jonathan Tah headed the ball into the net from a Nathaniel Brown corner. However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed as Waldemar Anton was judged to have impeded goalkeeper Orlando Gill in the build-up.

With no further goals, the match was decided by penalties, where Paraguay secured a memorable victory to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
