32 Miners Confirmed Dead After Coal Mine Explosion Near Quetta, Search Continues for Two Missing Workers

QUETTA: Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of 32 miners following a coal mine explosion in the Sorange coalfield near Quetta, while search operations continue for two workers who remain missing, officials said.

The incident occurred on Thursday at a private coal mine in the Sorange area, located northeast of Quetta.

Methane Gas Explosion Triggered the Incident

According to officials, the explosion was caused by a buildup of methane gas inside the mine. The blast led to a fire and caused sections of the underground structure to collapse.

The impact of the explosion also affected a nearby coal mine, complicating rescue efforts.

Rescue Operation Continues

The Chief Inspector of Mines, Balochistan, said that 34 miners were working inside the two mines when the incident occurred.

Rescue teams have so far recovered 32 bodies, while efforts continue to locate the remaining two miners.

Officials said emergency teams have been working continuously despite difficult underground conditions.

Challenging Conditions Slow Rescue Efforts

Rescue personnel and mining engineers have created alternative access routes to reach the affected areas.

However, the presence of methane gas, fire, and damaged underground passages has made the operation difficult and slowed progress.

Government Announces Financial Assistance

Provincial Minister for Mines and Minerals Mir Shoaib Nosherwani announced financial assistance for the affected families.

According to the minister:

• The families of each deceased miner will receive Rs500,000 in compensation.
• Rs300,000 will be provided to every injured worker.

He also confirmed that an official inquiry will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Coal mining remains one of the country’s most hazardous occupations, with workers often facing challenging underground conditions.
