Babar Azams resigns Pakistan white-ball captaincy

Babar Azam Steps Down as Pakistan Cricket Captain After Challenging Year

In a surprising move, Babar Azam has resigned as captain of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team for the second time in less than a year. Following a challenging period, including a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, Babar announced his decision on social media, expressing a desire to reduce his workload and focus on his personal performance and well-being.

In a heartfelt message posted on X, Babar explained his reasons for stepping down. “It’s been an honor to lead the team, but it’s time for me to step aside and prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend more quality time with my family,” he wrote. Babar expressed his gratitude for the support of fans and stated that this decision would allow him to concentrate more on his game and personal growth.

Babar’s announcement comes six months after he was reappointed captain of Pakistan’s white-ball teams. His previous resignation came after a disappointing run in the ODI World Cup in India last year, where Pakistan’s performance fell short of expectations. Despite his brief return to leadership, the team struggled, winning only six out of 13 T20 matches and facing an early exit from the T20 World Cup after losses to the USA and India.

While Babar’s tenure as captain saw many high points, including series wins against South Africa and Australia and reaching the final stages of two consecutive T20 World Cups, his second stint was marked by mixed results. Notably, he did not have the opportunity to lead the team in any 50-over games during his most recent term as captain.

There has been no official response from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding Babar’s resignation. The team is now preparing for a series of white-ball matches in Australia next month, including three T20Is and three ODIs.

Babar remains optimistic about his future contributions to the team as a player, emphasizing his commitment to improving his performance and continuing to play a key role in Pakistan’s cricketing success.

This decision marks another significant shift in Pakistan’s cricket leadership, with fans and the cricketing community eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Babar Azam’s illustrious career.
