Rawalpindi Declares 250+ Buildings Unsafe Amid Monsoon Season: Urgent Evacuation Ordered
The Metropolitan Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR) has declared over 250 old and structurally unsafe buildings across the city as dangerous, urging immediate evacuation to prevent accidents during the ongoing monsoon season.
🚨 High-Risk Zones Identified
A recent survey conducted by city authorities identified numerous residential and commercial properties—especially in Raja Bazaar, Bhabra Bazaar, Moti Masjid Lane, and Dangi Khoi—as critically hazardous due to age, poor maintenance, and weather impact.
Out of these, 188 buildings have been categorized as “highly dangerous“, posing a serious threat to public safety amid heavy rainfall and potential seismic activity.
📜 Evacuation Orders & Legal Action
Under the Punjab Local Government Act, 2022, notices have been issued to property owners, instructing them to repair or demolish the unsafe structures within 15 days.
Authorities have warned that non-compliance will result in legal action against both building owners and current residents.
🏚️ Low-Income Families at Risk
Many residents, especially low-income families, are reluctant to vacate due to the lack of alternative housing options. Citizens have appealed to the government for immediate relocation support, highlighting the urgent need for assistance to avoid potential tragedies.
⚠️ Why This Matters
The MCR has issued a clear warning: continued occupation of these buildings could lead to life-threatening incidents, including roof collapses, which have already occurred in parts of the city during recent rainfalls.
