Punjab Information Minister Hints at Possible Military Trial for Imran Khan
LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated on Wednesday that former Prime Minister Imran Khan might not be exempt from accountability, indicating that his trial could potentially take place in a military court. Bokhari’s remarks come in light of the ongoing investigation into the events of May 9.
“If Imran Khan is found to be involved in the May 9 violence, he will be held accountable. During his tenure, civilians were tried in military courts, and Adiala’s prisoner will not be spared,” Bokhari said in a press conference.
However, conflicting statements have emerged regarding the possibility of a military trial. Punjab Law Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmad Barth clarified that no formal proposal has been considered to refer Imran Khan’s case to a military court. “No summary regarding the referral of Imran Khan’s case to military courts has been submitted to the provincial cabinet or the law department,” he said.
This comes after Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar previously indicated that the Punjab government could decide to send Khan’s case to a military court if deemed necessary.
PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan strongly opposed the idea of a military trial, warning that such a move could widen the gap between the people and institutions.
Punjab Government’s Performance
Minister Azma Bokhari also highlighted several initiatives undertaken by the Punjab government over the past six months. She pointed out that 80,000 people have registered for the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” program, and 800,000 for the “Kisan Card” initiative. Additionally, the provision of solar panels is expected to ease the burden of rising electricity bills on Punjab residents.
Bokhari also addressed opposition to the electricity relief program launched by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, asserting that Nawaz’s leadership has brought tangible relief to the people of Punjab. She claimed that for the first time under the PML-N government, the province’s debt has been reduced.
Efforts to reduce smog were also highlighted, with Bokhari noting that farmers had been arrested for burning stubble using Safe City Authority cameras. She anticipates a significant reduction in smog this year due to these preventive measures.
