WhatsApp Will Bring Moving Photos Soon

WhatsApp Beta Adds Support for Sharing Motion Photos on Android

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature in its latest Android beta version 2.25.22.29, allowing users to share motion photos. This update is currently available to select beta testers through the Google Play Beta Program and will roll out to more users in the coming weeks.

What Are Motion Photos?
Motion photos are short video clips that capture moments just before and after a still image is taken, often including sound. Popular on devices like Samsung Galaxy’s β€œMotion Photo” and Google Pixel’s β€œTop Shot,” these clips offer a richer way to relive memories compared to regular photos.

How Motion Photos Work on WhatsApp
Users can now pick a motion photo from their gallery and send it as a dynamic image, preserving both movement and audio. Alternatively, they can convert the motion photo into a still image via the editing screen before sharing. Sent motion photos feature a small motion icon on the thumbnail to help distinguish them from regular pictures.

Device Compatibility
This feature supports motion photo formats from compatible Android devices. For example, Google Pixel users may need to turn off the 50MP high-res mode to enable Top Shot. With WhatsApp’s integration, there’s no longer a need to convert motion photos into videos or use third-party apps for sharing.

Currently, the motion photo feature is limited to certain beta testers, but wider access will be granted gradually over the next few weeks.
