Marseille Signs World Cup Winner Benjamin Pavard from Inter Milan
MARSEILLE: Ligue 1 club Marseille made a headline-grabbing move on transfer deadline day by signing Benjamin Pavard, the 2018 World Cup-winning French defender, from Inter Milan.
The 29-year-old joins Marseille on loan, with a purchase option reportedly set at €15 million ($17.5 million), according to French newspaper L’Equipe. Pavard returns to Ligue 1 for the first time since leaving Lille in 2016, having spent three seasons at Stuttgart and four successful years at Bayern Munich, winning multiple titles.
Pavard becomes the fourth 2018 World Cup winner to play in France this summer, joining Olivier Giroud (Lille), Paul Pogba (Monaco), and Florian Thauvin (Lens).
Marseille also strengthened their defense by confirming the arrival of Italy international Emerson Palmieri from West Ham, as the club looks to bolster their backline for the season.
