Villages marooned after deadly floods in India

Deadly Floods in Punjab Leave 29 Dead, Affect Over 250,000

Punjab, India – September 2, 2025

Deadly floods have struck the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, leaving at least 29 people dead and affecting over 250,000 residents, authorities reported. Thousands of villagers have been forced to seek shelter in relief camps as floodwaters continue to disrupt daily life.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the disaster as “one of the worst flood events in decades”, with over 940 square kilometres (360 square miles) of farmland submerged, causing severe crop losses. Authorities also fear massive livestock losses, the full scale of which will only become clear once the waters recede.

The Indian government has launched extensive rescue operations, deploying more than 1,000 boats and 30 helicopters to evacuate stranded residents and deliver essential supplies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the Chief Minister of full federal support to assist affected communities.

Rivers in Punjab flow into neighboring Pakistan, where floodwaters have also caused widespread disruption. Experts note that climate change and unplanned development are intensifying monsoon floods in the region, which are becoming increasingly frequent and severe.

Meanwhile, heavy rains have swelled rivers in Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir, causing additional flooding and traffic disruptions, highlighting the ongoing impact of the June–September monsoon season across northern India.
