PDMA Issues Heavy Rain and Flood Alert for Punjab and Sindh
October 2, 2025
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a fresh warning of heavy rains and possible floods as two major weather systems are expected to impact Pakistan in the coming days.
🌧️ Arabian Sea System to Affect Sindh
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a strong low-pressure system that formed near India’s Saurashtra coast has moved into the northeast Arabian Sea, about 310 kilometers southeast of Karachi.
-
The system is expected to intensify into a tropical depression within 12 hours.
-
Karachi and 11 districts of southern Sindh — including Tharparkar, Umerkot, Badin, and Mirpurkhas — may see light to moderate rain with winds up to 55 km/h.
-
Fishermen have been advised to avoid deep-sea ventures until October 3 due to rough sea conditions.
The PMD has also warned that strong winds and lightning could damage fragile infrastructure such as mud houses, electricity poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.
⚠️ Flood Risks for Punjab
While Sindh braces for rainfall, Punjab faces a serious flood threat. The PDMA has forecast that a powerful westerly wave will hit northern and northeastern Punjab — including the upper catchments of major rivers — between October 5 and 7.
-
The system could bring heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flash flooding.
-
Authorities are monitoring river embankments closely, as sudden water surges could overwhelm protective barriers.
📊 Current Situation
Pakistan is still reeling from one of its worst monsoon seasons in years:
-
Over 1,000 lives lost nationwide since late June.
-
In Punjab alone, 4.7 million people affected and 2.5 million displaced.
-
Around 4,700 villages submerged.
-
Severe crop damage reported in cotton, rice, and sugarcane fields.
Although water levels at Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri barrages remain normal for now, officials warn that the situation could change rapidly with incoming rains.
🌡️ Weather Outlook
-
Karachi: Humid and partly cloudy, with temperatures between 33–36°C. Light drizzle or rain is expected through Friday.
-
Other parts of Sindh: Mostly hot and dry weather, outside of storm-affected districts.
🛑 Authorities on High Alert
Provincial disaster management authorities in both Sindh and Punjab have placed local administrations on high alert. Deputy commissioners and disaster committees have been directed to:
-
Monitor the situation 24/7.
-
Submit daily reports.
-
Ensure preparedness for possible evacuations and relief operations.
