First Supermoon of 2025 to Light Up the Sky on Tuesday Night: Suparco

KARACHI: Stargazers across Pakistan are in for a treat as the first of three supermoons of 2025 will illuminate the night sky on Tuesday, October 7, according to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco).

A supermoon occurs when the Moon comes closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual — up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than an average full moon.

Suparco officials confirmed that the supermoon will peak at 8:47 PM (PKT) on Tuesday. It will rise in the east shortly after sunset and set in the west just before dawn. The Moon will be approximately 224,599 miles (361,457 kilometers) from Earth, appearing 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than usual.

Astronomy enthusiasts will also get a chance to spot Saturn close to the Moon on Monday and Tuesday evening, making the event even more spectacular.

According to Suparco, the brightest supermoon of the year is expected in November, when the Moon will be at an even closer distance of 221,817 miles (356,980 kilometers) from Earth.

The rare celestial display will be visible not only in Pakistan but across the globe, providing a breathtaking view for skywatchers everywhere. Following this event, two more supermoons are scheduled to appear on November 5 and December 5.

Last month, a blood moon (total lunar eclipse) was missed by many in Karachi due to heavy cloud cover. In contrast, this week’s clear skies are expected to offer ideal viewing conditions for the upcoming supermoon.

For those hoping to capture the moment, astronomers suggest finding an open area away from city lights for the best viewing experience.
