San Diego Wave Edge Washington Spirit 2-1 to Go Top in NWSL Standings

The San Diego Wave secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the Washington Spirit on Friday night, ending the Spirit’s five-match winning streak and moving to the top of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) standings.

Late header seals win

Kimmi Ascanio scored a decisive late goal in the 89th minute, heading in a corner from Kenza Dali to give the Wave all three points.

The match was closely contested, with both teams showing strong attacking intent throughout. San Diego initially took the lead early in the first half before Washington responded to level the score before halftime.

Key performances in a tight contest

Trinity Byars opened the scoring for San Diego in the seventh minute with her first professional goal, while Rebeca Bernal equalized for the Washington Spirit in the 33rd minute.

Despite Washington’s strong recent form, San Diego held firm and found a late breakthrough to secure an important win.

In other matches, Gotham FC recorded a 2-0 win over Seattle, Kansas City Current defeated Houston 3-0, and the match between Boston and Bay FC ended in a 1-1 draw.
