Matt Chapman’s 10th-Inning Hit Lifts Giants Past Cubs 2-1
CHICAGO: Matt Chapman delivered a walk-off style moment in extra innings, driving in the automatic runner with a single in the 10th inning as the San Francisco Giants edged the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Sunday night at Wrigley Field.
Chapman’s sharp line drive to center came off Trent Thornton and allowed Jonah Cox, who entered as a pinch runner, to score from second base. The win helped the Giants take the series 2-1 and marked their fourth victory in the last five games.
Keaton Winn earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning, working through a hit and a walk. Dylan Smith closed out the 10th with a perfect frame to secure his first Major League save.
For the Cubs, Javier Assad delivered a strong relief outing with 6 1/3 scoreless innings after starter Jameson Taillon left the game early due to a left hamstring strain. Assad held the Giants hitless after Chapman’s infield single and kept them quiet through much of the night.
