Shadab Khan Emerging as Potential Candidate for Pakistan T20I Captaincy

Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan is being considered as a possible option for the national T20I captaincy as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reviews its leadership structure following recent performances in the format.

According to reports, the PCB is evaluating potential changes after Pakistan’s recent T20I campaign, with discussions ongoing about future leadership plans for the team.

Salman Ali Agha was appointed Pakistan’s T20I captain in March 2025, with Shadab Khan serving as his vice-captain. The current review is said to be part of a broader assessment of team performance and direction in the shortest format.

Recent Tournament Performance

Pakistan’s recent T20I campaign saw mixed results. The team secured victories against the Netherlands, United States, and Namibia during the group stage, while suffering a defeat against India.

In the Super Eight stage, Pakistan’s match against New Zealand was abandoned due to weather conditions. The team later lost to England but managed a narrow win over Sri Lanka.

Despite winning four matches overall, Pakistan was unable to progress to the semi-final stage of the tournament.

Shadab’s Experience and Role

Shadab Khan has previously led Pakistan in T20Is and has experience in leadership roles at the international level. Between 2020 and 2023, he captained the side in six matches, winning two and losing four.

He remains a key all-rounder for Pakistan, contributing both with the ball and in lower-order batting positions. Over his career, he has been one of Pakistan’s leading wicket-takers in T20 internationals.

During the recent tournament, Shadab also contributed valuable runs in several matches, adding depth to the batting lineup.

PCB Yet to Make Final Decision

The Pakistan Cricket Board has not issued any official confirmation regarding a change in captaincy. Any decision is expected to be made after further evaluation of team performance and future planning.

If a leadership change is approved, Shadab Khan is considered one of the leading candidates for the role due to his experience and all-round capabilities.
